Some restaurants close and stay with you anyway. Chalet is one of them, and for the fifth year running, it’s back at EQ Kuala Lumpur this August, ready to be someone’s first memory, and someone else’s favourite one all over again.

For the fifth consecutive year, EQ Kuala Lumpur is reviving Chalet, the celebrated Swiss and Continental restaurant from the original Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur that shaped how a generation of this city’s diners first understood European fine dining. The Chalet pop-up runs from 13 to 31 August 2026, and closes with a Merdeka Day Brunch on the 31st.

The dining room at Chalet has always been a room of memory. Those who return today reminisce a childhood birthday spent watching their parents order in French, or a milestone celebration where the dancing dessert was spun by the table, or even a business lunch that felt like they were being taken seriously for the first time. They return now with their own children in tow, showing them a glimpse of their past they had described time and time again. And for the guests experiencing Chalet’s European sensibilities for the first time, they arrive having heard about it with reverence and an air of magic.

Through Chalet, EQ preserves a dining style that has almost all but disappeared from Kuala Lumpur’s restaurant landscape. Swiss and European cuisine is centered around technique and ritual, being slow and personal over novelty and spectacle. The menu does not surprise, it reminds: Caesar salad assembled at the gueridon the traditional way, Raclette Traditionnelle and its molten cheese scraped onto potatoes and cornichons in the alpine ways, or the Fondue Bourguignonne with cubes of Angus beef cooked in hot oil at the table with horseradish cream and salsa verde.

Patience is a virtue at the table, where conversation and community are ingredients in the experience. Not seen elsewhere in the city, the Canard à la Presse is perhaps the most theatrical dish on the menu. A whole roasted duck compressed at the table to extract its juices, which are then incorporated into the sauce is a preparation that dates back to 19th century France. Finding it in KL in 2026 is something of a rare gem in itself.

Desserts are never an afterthought. Crêpes Suzette and Cerises Jubilé arrive flambéed tableside, their blue flames drawing glances from neighbouring tables, while the Sabayon du Chalet—the restaurant’s famous “dancing dessert”—closes the meal with flourish. Throughout, the CNJ Trio provides the evening’s soundtrack with melodies evergreen like the Chalet story.

First opened in 1974 within Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur, Chalet spent nearly four decades as one of the city’s most prestigious tables—the address where anniversaries were solemnised, business was conducted over Lobster Thermidor, and Malaysia’s royalty and glitterati arrived for evenings that lingered long after the final flambé. More than a destination for special occasions, it was where a generation of KL diners cut their teeth on Continental hospitality — learning the grammar of tableside service, silver cutlery, and flambéed desserts that left a mark on a generation of KL diners and the establishments that followed. When Hotel Equatorial closed in 2012 for a RM1 billion redevelopment that would eventually give rise to EQ, Chalet closed with it. For eleven years, it existed only in the memory of those who had sat at its tables.

In 2023, as EQ marked its 50th anniversary, Chalet returned. What started as a commemorative pop-up has become one of the city’s most anticipated summer tables running every August since. Whether it stays that way remains to be seen. But for now, August belongs to Chalet.
