The House of Suntory officially introduced Toki Suntory whisky to Malaysia through a guided afternoon across four serves that explains why the blend named after time rewards attention.

The walls of An Livehouse are made for music, but on this afternoon, they belonged entirely to a bottle. Floor-to-ceiling LED panels blazed in Toki red, the rectangular silhouette of the bottle repeated across every surface in the room, projected overhead and reflected underfoot. It was time Toki Suntory Whisky made its official debut in Malaysia.
Toki is the House of Suntory’s most accessible entry point into its premium distillery expressions, built around Chief blender Shinji Fukuyo’s decision to elevate Chita heavy-type grain whisky to equal standing with the malts, departing from the conventional blending hierarchy where grain whisky tends to be in a supporting role.

In Toki, Hakushu American white oak cask malt whisky contributes freshness, soft mellowness, and vibrant green apple character. Chita brings clean structure, vanilla-like smoothness, and a rounded texture that reveals itself most fully under cold. Yamazaki’s select malts add depth, roundness and layered complexity. The blend is 50% malt and 50% grain, a symmetry that reflects the harmony, or wa, that defines the House of Suntory’s philosophy. It sits in the portfolio with the flagship signature Hibiki Japanese Harmony blend, which occupies a premium positioning over Toki’s more accessible one.
The launch was followed with four serves, each one illuminating a different facet of the spirit. First came the welcome highball, with orange peel as a way of highlighting Toki’s specific flavour profile. The orange amplifies where a typical lemon deflects, and the difference a brighter, rounder drink that plays alongside the whisky.

A preparation on the rocks came next, guided by Darwin Ng, House of Suntory Brand Ambassador for Malaysia, and it was here that Toki’s most unexpected quality surfaced. The chill draws out a creaminess from the Chita grain whisky, noticeable in its viscosity and softness in the mouthfeel that the nose undermines. It is a discovery that makes you reconsider the glass in your hand. This is Toki Time: not a moment engineered by occasion or setting, but one that arrives through attention and a pause reclaimed in the act of noticing the unexpected.

Demonstrating the versatility of Toki, two of KL’s most distinctive voices behind the bar presented creations designed around the whisky. Shirmy Chan of TeRu.Mi, whose bartending philosophy she describes as mindful—attentive to every detail, however small—crafted a cocktail inspired by her personal visit to the Hakushu distillery, where the verdant forest and crisp mountain air left an impression she translated through cucumber. The result in the glass was something neither cucumber nor forest but something in between with melon notes, clean and cool. It was a cocktail about a place, mediated through an ingredient, thousands of kilometres away from Japan.
Joel Poon of Reka Bar—whose bar’s name means “create,” and whose focus is future food and drink—took a different approach. Where Shirmy’s drink was a translation, Joel’s was an excavation. His cocktail was built around the tartness and fruitiness of apples as a direct engagement with Toki’s own character, with the intention to bring out the individual flavours of each of the three distillery expressions that make up the blend. The result was apple-forward and immediately legible, with a complex finish that resisted the simplicity of the opening. In pulling Toki apart, Joel inadvertently demonstrated why it holds together so well—the complexity he was chasing kept reassembling itself.

Toki Suntory Whisky is now officially available in Malaysia at selected premium bars including An Livehouse KL, Pahit, TeRu.Mi, Coley, Reka Bar, Frank’s Bar KL, Dear Hearts, and Chilled Spirits, as well as leading retailers and online platforms nationwide.
