Rosewood Hotel Group has confirmed its first urban hotel in Japan, set in Tokyo’s Roppongi district.

Rosewood Hotel Group has officially announced Rosewood Tokyo, its first urban hotel in Japan, set within the Roppongi 5-Chome development in partnership with Mori Building and Sumitomo Realty & Development. The announcement was made today by CEO Sonia Cheng, who described the Tokyo entry as a long-held ambition for the brand.
The hotel will crown one of the tallest buildings in Japan, directly connected to Roppongi Subway Station as part of a mixed-use development integrating hospitality, residences, retail and office space, and a 16,000 sqm urban forest at its base. The property will feature approximately 200 guestrooms and suites, including expansive three-bedroom accommodations, alongside destination dining and bar concepts inspired by Tokyo’s culinary culture, the brand’s signature Asaya wellbeing concept with indoor pool and fitness facilities, a Manor Club, and a grand ballroom.
Rosewood Tokyo will be the brand’s second property in Japan, following Rosewood Miyakojima, which opened on 1 March 2025 as a 55-villa ultra-luxury retreat on Miyako Island in the Okinawan archipelago. The brand frames the two properties as complementary—the Tokyo hotel bringing an urban perspective to the serene, nature-led experience Miyakojima established.
The brand’s guiding philosophy, A Sense of Place, holds that each property should be a deeply local expression of its destination, shaped by heritage and the specific character of its neighbourhood rather than a replicable template. Its portfolio includes icons like The Carlyle in New York, Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, and The Chancery Rosewood in London—each a hotel that defines its city more than simply being in it. In 2025, Rosewood Hong Kong was ranked No. 1 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels. For a sense of what Rosewood’s hospitality feels like closer to home, read our Rosewood Phnom Penh review.
At the helm is Sonia Cheng, who became CEO of Rosewood Hotel Group in 2011 at the age of 30. New World Hospitality—her family’s company—acquired Rosewood, then based in Texas, for a reported US$229.5 million. Cheng led a sustained global reinvention that took the brand from a respected American name to one of the most decorated luxury hotel groups in the world. The portfolio today encompasses 58 hotels and resorts across 26 countries, with over 30 additional properties under development.
No opening date or design details of Rosewood Tokyo have been confirmed.
