Like every good kombucha, success takes time to brew. Seven years after its first bottles reached local shelves, Malaysia’s own WonderBrew has risen to global acclaim, bringing home six international titles at the World Kombucha Awards 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.

Kombucha? Jun Tea?

Kombucha is a naturally fermented tea drink made with a culture of yeast and bacteria called SCOBY, often prized for its tangy flavour and probiotic benefits. Various fruits and flavours can be infused to creative unique concoctions such as WonderBrew’s extensive catalogue. Its honey-based cousin, Jun tea, uses green tea instead of black and honey in place of sugar, yielding a gentler, floral profile with the vinegary scent that divides customers.

From Small-Batch Dreams to Global Recognition

It all started in 2018 when Joseph Poh, frustrated by chronic indigestion and inspired by his first taste of kombucha, signed up for a brewing course and began home-brewing in his flat.

With co-founder Lok Boon Eng, WonderBrew began with a simple mission: to make kombucha approachable without compromising authenticity. Combining scientific precision with local creativity, the brewery quickly became a fixture in Malaysia’s wellness-driven beverage movement. Its line-up is bright, fruit-forward, and refreshingly balanced, showing that probiotic drinks can be both delicious and design-forward.

Today, WonderBrew bottles can be found across cafés, supermarkets, and homes nationwide.

Globally, kombucha has become a symbol of mindful living. It is a drink that bridges health, sustainability, and artistry.

In Malaysia, brands like WonderBrew have localised that culture through tropical flavours and creative branding while staying true to kombucha’s roots in natural fermentation and essence. For a brand built on patience, probiotics, and passion, this recognition is well-deserved.

True to its mission, WonderBrew sources most ingredients from Malaysian farmers, brews in small batches, uses glass and recycled packaging and even collaborates on up-cycled SCOBY being transformed into vegan leather.
